"Eu sunt sultana Ayşe Hafsa. M-am născut în iarna anului 1479, în seraiul Crimeei, ca fiică a hanului Mengli Giray. În acel an a fost o iarnă atât de cumplită, încât Marea Neagră a îngheţat. I-au spus mamei mele că nu voi apuca primăvara. Mama m-a înfăşurat în blănuri şi s-a rugat nopţi la rând să apuc primăvara. Slavă Domnului, am prins-o! În 1494, când am împlinit 15 ani, am pornit în larg din portul Kerci, pe marea otomană, cu galera dată în dar de tatăl meu. Am coborât mireasă în portul Trabzon, odată cu flota otomană care mă însoţea.
Eu şi sultanul Selim am ocrotit timp de 26 de ani căsătoria considerată potrivită de tata, hanul Crimeei şi sultanul Bayezit Han. Am trăit mulţi ani în seraiul din Trabzon. Aici mi-am ţinut în braţe primul copil, Suleyman. Dumnezeu ne-a dăruit mulţi copii. Dar nu ne-a fost dat să-i creştem, să ne bucurăm de ei. Pe cei trei băieţi născuţi după Suleyman i-am pierdut înainte să împlinească 10 ani, din pricina bolilor molipsitoare. Orhan, Musa şi Korkut...N-am avut parte de ei. Am lăsat micile lor morminte în Trabzon. Mi-am alinat durerea alături de Suleyman şi de fetele mele, Hatice, Fatma, Şah Sultan şi Beyhan. Am trăit ani întregi cu teamă, din cauza conflictelor pentru succesiunea la tron dintre fraţii sultanului Selim şi tatăl lui, sultanul Bayezit Han.
Mi-am sacrificat viaţa pentru ca unicul meu fiu să nu fie sacrificat în această luptă sângeroasă. Ca să nu-l las singur pe Suleyman, am fost alături de el în toate sangeacurile în care a mers.
